CPU Usage Problem for XP Pro

I am having a horrible problem with my cpu usage as of late. I havent installed any new hardware, and the only new thing I have done is set up a small network with my roommates with a router. I recently scanned their computers for viruses w/ Mcafee through my computer and cleaned up their problems. Since then, my computer has been freezing and usage is at 100%. There are no wierd programs going on in my task manager. The usage seems to go up whenever I run any sort of program . Adobe tends to freeze it along with my mcaffe. So I attempted to unistall both, but they would not unistall, adobe due to internal error 2203. C:\WINDOWS\Installer\d49a7.ipi,-2147024814 and mcaffe because (c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\agent\uninst\screm.ui) is missing. As far as I know, I have taken myself and the rest of my roommates off the network, but still to no avail. Now I am at a loss, scan disk finds no problems, and my computer can't run at a solid enough level to even run two internet explorers at the same time. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you,
Benson

When the CPU usage starts to go up, is it actually the MCAFEE or ADOBE process that is using 100% in the task manager, or is it just that starting those programs causes some other process to go to 100%.

it depends on which ever one is running. it seems that ANY program in general that takes up a decent amount of RAM shoots the usage up through the roof.
I have also tried searching with SPYBOT S&D, but found nothing of interest.

well ive reformatted since ive had this problem..and it still does it, although i always stick the same appz on, so it could be one of them.....maybe worth formatting and making a restore point as soon as ive put windows back on, then stick an app on one at a time, and see what happens???

Cpu usage high
If you are experiencing "random" slowdowns and "high" CPU usage for no reason .

Try performing an advanced clean-boot of XP to isolate the problem:

Disable Indexing Services

Indexing services is a small program that hogs HUGE amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexing and updates lists of the files on your system, so you can search for them quickly, but it's completley unnessesary.

To disable it, go to the Control Panel and click Add/Remove Programs. Click the Add/Remove Window Components. Simply unclick the Indexing services and click next!

Thank you all for your help. I pretty much gave up, backed up the important stuff on my harddrive, reformatted a few times, and reinstalled windows xp...now it seems to be up and running just fine.
Good luck out there. benson
