Talking Explorer.exe won't start

Well I had a similiar problem today and found your posts. I ended up going back and restoring the registry back to a day I knew it worked. At least form there I had functionality of the windows. Now I still run ME but this still may work. Insert a boot disk or somehow make your way to the DOS prompt. Go to c:\windows\command and type scanreg /restore. This will give you options for days to goto in order to restore back to. Go back to a day you knew it worked. You think you had it bad, windows safe mode would do the same thing and I couldn't do anything except for DOS. I hope this helps, If not scold me.

Smile XP won't start Explorer.exe

Hi All

I had same problem with XP Pro not opening Explorer, could run programs from Taskmanager. I had no Taskbar and no desktop icons.

I restarted in safe mode and then chose to run a restore point from a date when XP still worked. PC rebooted and finished some minutes later.

All ok, user may have lost a few emails cause he ran Outlook from Task manager.

Hope it helps someone else, I was at the point of reloading XP!

Gerry

I have the same problem and here is what i did and i call it symptom solution:

1. rename your explorer.exe to explorer1.exe
2. change the value "Explorer.exe" in regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon to "Explorer1.exe"
3. reboot

it will start normally but still i can't find source of this problem...
what all i know, it will terminate all the name *explorer.exe such as Diskexplorer.exe, myexplorer.exe and so on...

Hi, just a quick response. I've not read all replies so this may be of no help. I had a similar problem on an Acer computer today. I tried a number of things which involved fixing or replacing Windows files. Nothing worked. However, using the Task Manager and the command (file) appwiz.cpl I removed Google Desktop. Then I restarted Windows (XP SP 2) and voila - the problem was fixed. Thanks to others on this forum for the suggestions. Garth

I wanted to post a follow-up to garth's post.

I too experienced a problem similar to that of others in this thread. I was able to uninstall Google Desktop per his instructions and I was able to get iexplore.exe and explorer.exe working again.

My TCP/IP stack got corrupted in the process; I googled the error message and was able to troubleshoot the removal and reinstall of the stack.

The computer is good as new. Thanks garth for the tip.

Fixed Same Explorer.exe problem!

Hi, Thanks Garth, your method worked for me. I just uninstalled Google Desktop, then rebooted, and the Desktop and all the Icons and Task Bar appeared, whew!
I tried everything else I have read here and on other Forums, nothing else worked.

Hey guys I was half way through reading this thread and halfway through testing a pc with the same problem.
Now I pulled mountins upon mountins of spyware, viruses and trojans of this pc, once i got it cleaned up I began fiddling with the explorer.exe problem and I've found a fix for it.
I've downloaded a ISO of Service Pack 3 from the microsoft website. I burnt it to a cd then I booted the buggered pc, ran the explorer.exe through the task manager. I've then installed SP3, stuck in my windows SP2 cd, rebooted the pc, booted off the disk, opened the repair console with R on the first blue screen and then chkdsk /r (Check Disk with repair). Restarted the machine and its booting up fine.
Windows itself seems to be stable, its been running fine for over an hour now and I've been going through applications and folders seeing if I can get it to error or crash. I've gotten neither. I hope this helps some of you's guys. You could probably even get it to work by installing the SP2.
