WinXP Pro Install Fatal Error

I am trying to install Windows XP Pro (OEM) onto my computer, and everything goes fine in the initial install (formatting to FAT32, copying the install files, etc). When it reboots and enters the initial setup, thats where I start having problems.

It loads fine initially, but then when it tries to start the setup (the part where it says '39 minutes left'), it sits and reads the cd for a minute, then gives me a fatal error. The error looks like this:

Quote:
'Incorrect Function'

Fatal Error: D:/l386/asms. Incorrect Function

'One of the components that Windows setup needs to continue cannot be installed'

I read that sometimes this error occurs because of incompatible hardware, so I used my onboard video, tore out my sound/modem card and disabled usb. I tried seating my memory (1 128M DIMM of Kingston PC133 SDRAM) in the other avaliable slot, I reformatted/re-installed numerous times on both FAT32 and NTSB. The error occured when I used my PNY Verto GeForce FX (128m) video card in replacement for onboard video as well. I have a 1.70g P4 Celeron.

This is my motherboard: http://www.pcchipsusa.com/prod-m925alu.asp

If anyone has any fixes, or tips on how I could work around this I'd appreciate it. I tried booting from both the CD and the 6 boot disks and it didn't have any changes. I'm almost 100% it's a hardware problem, I just don't know whether its my RAM or my motherboard.

Boot without cd rom support ( using W98 boot disk )
From the A prompt > fdisk , reboot & format c:
Then from the A prompt > fdisk /mbr
Or,
format c:
Then from the A prompt > fdisk /mbr

Reboot with cd rom support using W98/me boot disk with emm386 & smartdrv on .
Execute SMARTDrive by typing smartdrv from the A prompt .
It will only take a couple of seconds to load.

Type drive:,( where drive is the drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM )and then press ENTER .

Type cd\i386 and then press ENTER . ( hit R if unable to load )
Type winnt and then press ENTER .
Windows XP Setup starts .
Type the path to the Windows XP installation files , and then press ENTER . For example , type d:\i386 ( may already be there )

Setup will then begin copying all of the Windows XP system files to your machine , which can take quite a while ( hours if smartdrv has'nt engaged )

Note : Always press Enter or hit the space bar to try again , for any can't copy messages .

If XP will not install .
Try using a different HAL, when set up says to press F6 for third party drivers, press F5 and choose Standard PC for the type of computer .

If the above HAL fails , more here .

I'm not having a problem copying the files to the hard drive, I'm having a problem after they are copied and it tries to boot for the first time (when it goes into the first 'setup' screen... that says '39 minutes left' on the left side)

Hah. Got an email notice...

I got XP installed, I had to use another copy (which was still giving me problems doing a fresh install), and had to install 98 then upgrade to XP for it to install properly.

Just out of curiosity, why are you using FAT32 instead of NTFS?

I had to upgrade from 98 to XP to get it to install correctly, and I couldn't install 98 on a NTFS disk.
