logon / welcome screen problem

i have a p3. 800, 448ram, windows XP pro with plenty of disk space. i use MyIE2 for a browser, and constantly have power menu, symantec corporate a/v and zone alarm running from my system tray.

for some reason my welcome screen changed back to the "classic" log in, so after trying to change it back to no avail (kept reverting back to classic log in) i installed the SP1 for xp. now, i cannot change it to the welcome screen at all, just the classic log in. when i go to ---> control panel ---> user accounts then click on the "change the way users log on or off" button, i get a message stating "Automation server can't create object"

whats going on here? why cant i get my welcome screen back?

note: welcome screen was a custom, however i had been working the same one for over a year no troubles

Hi Luthien,

I was under the impression that Microsoft had found a security issue with the original Welcome Screen, because once you have done all the relevant Windows/Security Updates the system automatically changes to the "Classic NT" Logon Screen, rather than the Welcome Screen that was used when XP was released.

I have just today installed Win XP, and am at this moment installing Service Pack 1.

At the moment it uses the Welcome Screen. So I will come back and let you know if I can still use the Welceme Screen after all the updates. !

OK Here is what I have learnt.

Previously I installed from a Windows XP (With SP1) CD.

And as I say after Windows Updates the Welceme Screen was gone.

This time I installed from a Windows XP CD, and then downloaded and installed SP1a) After the Windows Updates this time I still had the Welcome Screen. And I can also disable it and use the "Classic NT" Logon Screen.

So, what I would suggest to you is check what your install CD is. If it is a burned copy, then it might be one that comes pre-installed with the old Service Pack 1, you might need to get a new install CD with just XP and then download & install Service Pack 1A.

Let me know.

Try this open regedit and in the hive HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE navigate to the key below and change the "LogonType Dword to 0 this should force the welcome screen to come up at bootup. If you don't want to go into the registry, copy and paste the complete key below into notepad and "save as" welcome.reg, then double click on the reg key icon which was saved, you will get a warning that it is going to write to the registry accept that and the key will be patched.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"LogonType"=dword:00000001
