Connecting to Internet via desktop

I am having trouble connecting to the internet by using the shortcut icons on the desktop. Instead of it automatically bringing up the login box and dialing up, there is a box that pops up saying that the page is not available offline. I have always been able to connect to the net using this shortcut so i assume I must have changed something unknowingly. I have tried rebooting(over and over!) but the box still comes up when I click on these icons. Any help would be appreciated!!

Delete the shortcut & create a new one .

Start > All Programs , right click on Internet Explorer , scroll down to Send To & click on Desktop (create shortcut )
