Direct3D Graphics Problem - XP
Ever since I got SP1 (as far as I can tell) i've been having problems running Direct3D games and apps. OpenGL games still run fine and this has really got me puzzled.
What happens: I load up the game I wish to play, for example Operation Flashpoint. I get into the main game (where Direct3D is used) and the game will crach the computer randomly. Sometimes it returns you to the desktop and others it just completely locks up. I cant run MadOnion 3dMark because that crashes the same due to Direct3D. Here are my specs, I have all the latest drivers, please help me if you can.
AMD Athlon 1Ghz
VIA VT8363 - latest 4in1 drivers
VIA KT133 Chipset
WinXP Home SP1 - all known updates
nVidia GeForce 2 MX - 30.87 drivers
40GB 7,200rpm - this wont affect anything
256mb SDRAM
DirectX 8.1b
I also have other problems with XP, i'm not happy with it at all. If any of you have similar cases or problems with Direct3D games then please post here, any solutions would mean alot to me as I have £400 worth of Direct3D only games that I would dearly like to continue playing.

Have you tried obtaining the latest drivers for your graphics card. Also have you got the latest version of Direct X?

Yes for both, I have the latest updates for DirectX and I have the most recent certified drivers for my graphics card.

Right, how about the graphics card it's self. Is it pushed in to the port properly? Also check your hardware profile, see if there is any hardware conflit with the device.

I'm sure this is not the case, but I cannot check because I have renewed the warranty for my PC a while back but there is a sticker over the case joints which voids my warranty if removed. I have seen another forum with similar problems except that none of them had solutions, and is the graphics card was malfunctioning at all, OpenGL games wouldn't run either.

Hum..... you do have an interesting problem. You could have a problem with OpenGL, unfortunatly though I don't have a knowledge with OpenGL, but I ran this search on Google. Try having a look.
Hope you solve your problem.

Hmm, I have checked the OpenGL info from your search and everything is in order. I can play games scuh as counter-strike as theyt are OpenGL. Now I try to play Operation Flashpoint (Direct3D), 23 seconds in it crashes. I try to play GTA3 (Dircect3D) 46 seconds in, crashes. OK, I have a different approach I think to myself and I run an old classic dos game called "Death Rally", crashes once into the gameplay. I try another dos game "Settlers 2" runs fine, no crashes. I'm puzzled, I cannot determine the problem. Contacted nVidia, they were absolutely no help whatsoever.

I had a similar problem that was driving me nuts until a response to an inquiry on another forum pointed me to this link:
http://www.driverforum.com/graphics4/156.html.
It not only worked for me but a buddy as well. Good luck.

Don't use the Via drivers. Use the XP supplied ones.

Uninstall the current drivers and reinstall the XPs. You may have to select the driver that you want to use manually.

I have done that but with no change in the games. I installed the VIA drivers after the graphical problems occured. The only thing I have towards the source of this problem is that D3D games started crashing after SP1 was installed. Is there anything about SP1 that might give a hint as to whats going on?

Well I've tried absolutely everything I can think of and I have had no luck. If anyone has a clue please post it here, thanks.

Have you tried uninstalling Windows XP SP1 then playing a game. Also try this:
Go to Start > Run then type dxdiag then click each tab and look for any little yellow triangles with an exclaimation mark (!) then note the error messages and post them here.

You're not the Only one!
I've had similar problems after installing SP1. I'm a huge Halflife fan and having a GF4Ti4600 I always use direct 3D. However after installing SP1 I got massive amounts of pixel distortion in game which eventually led to crashing. I also had the same problems with the Aquarium Screensaver. My advice, go back to Win98 or 2000 until XPSP2 is released - Yet again M$ have released buggy, badley tested updates
