my mouse pointer keeps showing an hourglass every few minutes

I just recently did a system recovery, so I am really confused as to why this is happening. It turns to an hourglass for a very brief time, but it never happened before and certainly seems to be doing some kind of activity in the background.
I have windows xp. Please let me know if there is anything else you need to know.

Open Task Manager - Right Click an empty area of your Task Bar > Task Manager > Processes.

Whan the Cursor turns to an hour glass determine which process is using the high CPU % and get back to us.

It is hard to tell; oddly enough, when I am in task manager, it doesn't seem to happen as often. Also, the screen moves as soon as it does happen, so I can't really follow which one is being affected. I can tell you that svchost and taskmgr seem to go up to about 3 and system idle process is constantly very high; like 95% and also seems to go up with hourglass.
