Problem with system icons on desktop

I've been running Windows XP home edition (dutch version) for quite a while now, but recently ran into a problem with my system icons. Perhaps someone here can help me with it?

I still have two system icons on my desktop: my computer and network neigbourhood. Everything has always been changed on my desktop (renamed and different icons) and these icons have not been an exception. Some time ago I started to notish however that whatever I renamed the icons to, after a reboot they reset back to "my computer" and "network neigbourhood". And these days it's even so that the icons themselves also after every reboot return to their default values.

I've set these changes the normal way, and can't recall doing anything to my machine to recently to cause this behaviour (meaning: I forgot ). I'm the only user on my machine and have administrator rights on it. The only "odd" thing in relation to icons that I currently have going on is that I use the huge icons setting. But before that setting this problem already occured.

I only ever used TweakXP to "modify" my desktop any further, but that never caused any of these problems before.

Any help would be appreciated!

Try increasing the size of your icon cache.

Thanks for your quick response!

I have increased the size, but that didn't seem to help. I've also searched like a mad-man for that ShellIconCache file but could not find it (with viewing hidden files of course). Do you know where exactly it should be located? as it's not in my windows directory for example

Edit: I've searched for a tool to clear the Icon Catch, found one, cleared it and it still did not solve the problem

In XP icons are in Windows\system32\SHELL32.dll

Microsoft has a workaround that seems crude but some people have said that it worked for them. See the quote:

"Go into Control Panel and fire up the "Desktop" applet, the one with settings for icon sizes. Now just change one setting, either horizontal or vertical, of the shell icon size and hit "Apply". That's all. You'll see your system go a bit crazy for a while and then things will return to normal again and your icons and fonts should be all right. Now just shift the icon settings back again."

Hmmm... I must be really stupid because I find that quote most confusing. It doesn't help that the system I am on is a Dutch version of WinXP and as such all the names are different, but the only thing I could find where my desktop settings, going to the advanced features where you can set all the colours of your windows, font family used, font size, etc.

There I found a way to set Icon sizes, but nothing about horizontal or vertical. Just the size of the things. Tried that but that didn't really work either :S

Try getting there from your desktop.

(right-click) Desktop > Properties > (tab) Appearance > (button) Advanced

Under "Item" choose "Icon Spacing (Horizontal)" or "Icon Spacing (Vertical)" or maybe "Icon" and changing the size of the icon.

My problem with testing this is that there's nothing wrong with my icons and I don't see any difference when I do it.

aah! I actually was there before but didn't notish the horizontal and vertical settings (so I truely am blind it seems ). Unfortunatly that also didn't help and those two system icons still refuse to budge...

I have notished however that "My Computer" is now litterly called that. Which may make you go like "so? wasn't that the problem?" well, it was called "mijn computer" (dutch for "my computer") and since a few reboots now it's suddently the english variant.

I am starting to believe Bill has other plans for my icons then I have. Your help so far has however been much appreciated!!

Edit: grammer fix
