windows messanger

hi all i am very new to xp just made the change from windows 98, my question is what is the difference between windows messanger and msn messanger, as on windows 98 i dowloaded msn nessager and talked to people on there, is this windows messanger the same thing?

Basically, Windows messenger is a free, ad-free version of MSN messenger, which to my knowledge runs ads and things. But as far as I know they both perform the same functions.
