networking xpPro and win2000

is there a way to network these two computers together? for XP i choose the option of making a network not connected to the internet and it made a disk but then i put the disk into the win2k computer it says that the networking was only ment for win98 and winME computers so the network disk would not work

(both machines)right click my computer, select properties. on the computer name tab, give each a computer description(if they dont have one already). now click the change button, make sure each has a different computer name, then on workgroup, make sure they both have the same thing, 2k by default adds workgroup, xp adds mshome, can make it whatever you like as long as they are the same. do not restart, click the remote tab and put a check in allow users to connect remotely to this computer, apply and reboot. you should now have basic networking, will have to share the files you want to have access to, as for the internet connection, which ever machine has the internet, just dont share the connection, or do if you want it.

I have the solution to your problem:

If you have the installation disc for WinXP, browse the disc and look in VALUEADD/MSFT/NET/NETBEUI

There are two files you will need in the folder, NBF.SYS and NETNBF.INF..

These files must be dropped respectively into WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ and WINDOWS\INF folders on your XP machine in order to add the NETBEUI protocol back into it, since Microsoft has discontinued support for the outdated protocol. Unfortunately, this is the protocol that Windows 2000 uses for networking.

You should then open network connection properties, go to your ethernet adapter and install the protocol, which should now appear in the list.

(If in doubt, follow the directions in the text file included in the Netbeui folder of your installation disc.)

Your network should now be functional.

Hope this helps...

I have 2000 and XP Professional and thats exacly the way I configured the network betwen the 2 computers, You need to add the protocol and reboot the computers as well. Unfortunatly Microsuck do not keep supporting this anymore... Hurry up cos' with VIsta comming they are about to stop supporting XP as well... lol
