Unable to access XP update site

I have 3 PC's on a network that share cable internet connection via a Linksys router. 2 run XP the other ME. Both XP machines fail to access the Windows update website with the following message

RTSP/1.0 400 Bad Request Server: QTSS-Akamai/4.1 (Build/412.16; Platform/Linux) Cseq: Connection: Close

The PC running ME can access its update fine. Can anyone shed any light on the message I am getting from the XP machines please?

I have tried with the XP firewall enabled and disabled and get the same message regardless. I am running Norton Antivirus. I have the latest virus definitions loaded and ran a scan because I thought it might just be a virus. Both XP machines are clear.

I am no PC expert and dont understand the error message, Can anyone shed any light on the message I am getting from the XP machines please?

Thanks

not that i can help at this point, however i too have been having trouble with the xp update site, the computers i have with sp2 beta will get as far as the express or custom install screen. the ones with sp 1 are hit or miss, some wont go at all, some dont find all that i know should be availible. either way, on as many machines as i have tried, this could (more than likely) be a problem with the site. some people say it works fine for them.......

Solution Found

I actually got an answer from microsoft support today on this one and it works fine now. I am still accessing via linksys router despite what the message from MS says, however the host file deletion instructions solved the issue. Here is the MS mail ...

As I understand, Windows XP based system cannot access the Windows Update site via a Linksys router. If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

Based on the current information, I'd like to provide you with some suggestions below:

1. Click Start -> Search.

2. Click the "All files and folders" link, and then type "LMHOSTS" (without the quotation marks) in the "All or part of the file name" text box.

3. Click to select drive C: in the Look in drop down box.

4. Click the "More Advanced Options" entry, and then click to select the following check boxes:

Search System folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search subfolders

5. Click the Search button to search the LMHOSTS files on your computer. Delete all the files in the search results.

6. Repeat the steps above and search "HOSTS" files on your computer. Delete the search results.

Hope this helps.

I have a Linksys router and run three computers with Windows XP Pro. No problem accessing Windows update.

The only time I couldn't get to Windows Update to scan on a new computer I had hooked up to the router turned out to be a screw up on my part. I had set the system clock to the right day and month but the year was off by one. Windows XP will not scan for updates if the system clock is off by 100 days or more.

Don't know if this will help but thought I would offer anyway.

Good luck.........Charlie
