windows update

hi. i joined these forums because i have a problem with windows update. i forget all the details but when i go to download updates some wizard pops up for service pack 1. all goes well, then my mouse arrow freezes. i have to shut down my computer. ctrl-alt-del doesn't work. this has happened 3 or 4 times. any idea what causes it, or, better yet, any idea what i can do to keep it from happening again? i'd like to get these updates.
thanks.

Do you have an anti-virus program running? If so, that may be the cause of the problem (a not-uncommon occurrence with Norton AV, for example). Disable the AV program and try the update again.

Try to just leave it to do its thing, sometimes mine takes several minutes! Its annoying and everything will freeze if you try to move around at all, like to messenger etc.
