Chapter 2 of IE problems

Have XP Media Ed. Norton SystemWorks, Zone Alarm Pro. Have intermittent problem with IE, where it only loads @ about 97%. I have to go to task mgr/processes and close there. OR I have to shut the system off. Sometimes it just slows down to where Task Mgr won't come up.

After this, the only thing that works is to do a Norton DD, scan the hardrive on reboot. That takes hours (well, 1-2 hrs). Then it works fine for a while. If I use MSN 8 to access the internet, all is well. I have done virus checks, worm checks, system checks. The only other problem I have is Win Doctor will not run. Every time it gets halfway through a scan it reboots in the Common Files section. It never finishes.

I called Microsoft, and since this is an HP OEM they will not help me. Even though I have a subscription to Norton it would cost me, and I cannot even find where to contact them personally online. And my warranty ran out in December with HP.

Is there a virus not detected? Or a worm? I have uninstalled IE and reinstalled, it still happens. Am I going to have to start all over with a destructive clean?

Help!

if you havent tryed it. do a google search for hijackthis and run it. it will give ya info on what is going on with internet explorer. maybe it will find what your troubles are. it does nothing but inform you and give you the option to remove unwanted stuff.

also ive seen norton windoc halt and die if there are bad things in the temp internet dir. prolly you done cleaned it tho. just trying to point you to where ive had troubles before is all. and dont forget to clean those nasty old cookies lol.

and you said trojan scanners. have you used spybot? or addaware? both are free if you havent tryed em.

it sorta sounds like IE is having troubles with some addon. but thats just a guess. sometimes thats all you can do is a fresh start.

good luck

I gave up on IE months ago, see Avant Browser, its great! You also might like to try Registry First Aid, Google for them. Good luck.

Thumbs up

I have dl'd Ad-Aware, updated it, scanned, rebooted, scanned. Have "hijacked" as well. So far things are running well. I got rid of a TON of junk. Thanks for the Ad-aware tip. Had never seen it!

Guess I will get used to not having Gator. Sure was a convenience, but have a feeling I will be better off without it. Thought I had uninstalled much junk a year ago, Ad-aware found remnants that have probably been screwing everything up.

Only time will tell. Thank you all. You are fantastic!

Roboform is the BEST form filler, password manager there is with no adware or spyware.

Gator (called Gain now) is one of the worst pieces of adware/spyware ever devised. And hard to get rid of.
