Can't shut down windows.....

Hi, I have a 700 mgh Pentium III. I have recently upgraded to XP-Pro. When I try to "Turn off Computer" it looks as though windows is going to shut down, then the computer reboots. This is a recent problem. It just started happening out of the blue.....was fine for a while. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Could be a lot of different things but here is one to consider. This will happen with some motherboards if the power supply is puny. I had an el cheapo 300 watt PS and had the same problem. I switched to a 400 watt Antec and the problem went away.

Just a suggestion for something to try. May not be the answer.

Lots of Luck .......Charlie

Try this registry tweak

Power the Computer Off After Shutdown (Windows NT/2000/XP)
This setting controls whether Windows should automatically power down or reboot your computer once it has finished the shutdown process.

Open your registry and find the key below.
Create a new string value, or modify the existing value, called PowerdownAfterShutdown and set it to "1" to power off the computer at shutdown, or "0" to reboot.

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.
Note: This feature must be supported by the computer's BIOS.

Registry Settings
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Value Name: PowerdownAfterShutdown
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: (0 = default, 1 = power down)

Let us now if this helps... if you are worried about registry editing then do not do it. There are 3rd party apps you can use to accomplish this.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the help on this. It was the hint about "this feature must be supported by the computers BIOS" that did it. I had been messing around with it and didn't realize I had changed that setting.....went in and changed it back....problem solved! Thanks again to all.
