Windows Picture and Fax viewer is no longer default viewer

I cannot get Windows viewer to open anything in My Pictures folder. I was using Irfanview to make icons, when I realized this had changed.

When I click on a picture, the viewer opens for a second and no pic. If I right click the pic and select open with>, the viewer opens and says "preview not available".

I tried going to Tools>Folder Options>File Types, select BMP or JPEG and change the program that opens the file type, but I cannot tick the box that says "always use the selected program to open this type of file" because it is greyed out. Tried to do this in My Pictures folder and Windows Explorer. No can do. But, I can assign any other program to open the files with, and that does work. Just can't get Windows Pic and Fax viewer to do it.

When I go to Documents and Settings>Owner>My Documents>My Pictures, put the cursor over the Pic folder, the box says, Files: Access is denied (name of file) jpeg, etc.

Tried System Restore, sfc /scannow, and uninstalled Irfanview (for now), So.......Help please

Type this into the run command box and it should then start opening in the picture viewer regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll

I typed that in. It said: DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shimgvw.dll Succeeded. But....nothing has changed that I can see. One thing I forgot to mention earlier. The images files that I had (within) another folder, in My Pictures weren't affected. They still opened with the viewer. Only the single graphics files cannot be opened. Thanks

Not even sure how- but it's fixed. I was moving all the graphic files into folders, because the viewer "did" open pics if they were placed within a folder. Came across a folder that I had created the other day and the contents was everything in my desktop. When I moved that folder out of "My Pictures", the viewer started to open anything I clicked on. Need to start another thread on what to do with the desktop folder now.

@echo off
Title Open Picture and Fax Viewer
echo.
pause
start rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullsc reen
exit

this is an example... copy it to the Notepad and save it as .cmd

the command is "start rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32" no quotes
if you wanna use it as an Icon to lunch the application then ommit thr "start" word, ie. rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32

Hope this help
