XP is renowned for being a memory junkie, so it could be that it just FEELS slow compared to Win2k with only 128MB of RAM. I think is probably the case due to you doing a clean install.

However I upgraded from Win ME to XP on a 750MHz Athlon and 128MB of RAM and it was kind of okay (I knew it would be slow). Is it slow on booting (how many secs?) or do applications run slowly? Need more information!!

Cheers, boyNamedFoo.

Applications run very slow compaired to win 2k. The internet is a lot slower. Big difference.

XP should have nothing to do with your internet speed.

Also, I haven't heard of XP being a memory junkie. How much free hard drive space do you have? It might be that the page file does not have enough room. Also, are you running some sort of antivirus or firewall program?

It's you hardware that isn't up to it. I could give a long, boring answer as to why this is the case but basically you need at least 256MB of RAM for XP to run efficiently. A 256MB stick would definitely speed things up. (giving 384MB).

When XP is installed it analyses the hardware and installs certain parts (e.g. the kernel) differently to make the most of it. It also sets up the virtual memory to achieve best performance, however set the paging file to 384MB if it hasn't done so already.

I have a P3 850 with 512 megs of 133 ram. I have to say my machine runs great and it is outdated... so throw some memory in there at least 512 and then you can lower the page file this will speed the OS since the less xp has to take from the pagefile and grab from physical ram the better. Guranteed performance!!!

Adding more RAM would definitely be a big plus. At the same time...you could dissable some "unwanted services". See BlackViper's site.
