unable to download from internet

Just installed windows xp, and now I can not download any thing off the net. This includes useing an old netscape browser (4.7) IE 6, or the update program.
what happens is I click the down to download and then get the normal save pop up box, I click to start the download then the download popup box comes up. then its like it freezes, and will not download. It does not matter how long I let it sit it never downloads.
(note) I can install from a disk)
info on my system is windows XP with service pack 1 with IE 6
just Instaled feb 21. Its on a box with a 650 mhz pros. and 40 gig hard drive.
Is there some kind of admin control to prevent download? if so how do I change it?

Info on me is 45 year old playing with puter. systems I have instaled and setup with little problems are (RH5.2,RH6.0,RH7.2,SUSE7.3,win3.1,win95,win98)
Thanks in advance

Have you tried saving it to a different partition, like on the c:\ drive?

Got the same problem, I didn't find the solution.
You don't even get the opportunity to choose a location to save the files, it just frezzes and there is nothing to do.
However, by doing a system restore to an earlier date it worked, but I still don't know why it happend.
I remember I messed up a bit the internet options in IE, but I didn't see the result immediatly. Be sure the "download files "is checked in the security options of IE. It might be that.

sorry I did not figure this out sooner.
looks like I need to get a book on windows XP and read up.
thanks again for your help
