Unhappy taskbar icons disappear

Hello! I'm new here.

I've reinstalled Win XP on my laptop. After some system updates and instalations some icons in the notification area of the taskbar (right side of the taskbar) vanished and are not willing to appear. For example, the icon associated with "safely remove hardware", or my Officescan antivirus.
Can someone tell how to fix this?...

Thanks!
Francisco

Next time please use the search to look for your answer before posting. Someone with this exact same problem had a thread posted on the same page as this one. Here's the link to the answer

The question is that I read that article, but it didn't work out...

But I solved yesterday the problem with the help of the freeware "TaskbarRepairToolPlus!" by KDK tools. What the software does in this situation (option "Restore missing incons" in "Notification Area" menu) is to disable the services SSDP and uPNP.

Well, I think I solved my problem, but I hope that disabling this services won't screw something...

thanks.

No, disabling SSDP and UPnP won't screw anything up. As a matter of fact, disabling both of those services is highly recommended as both are security holes when running.

If you had those two enabled, you probably need to go to Black Viper's site and use the chart there to disable all of XP's unnecessary services. Use the settings in the Safe column.

It's a little tedious but well worth it in terms of better system performance and increased online security.
