extracting OS from recovery disks..how?

I just got a new Sony laptop at a show. It came with all the software loaded and about 7-8 recovery disks with all the software on them. Somewhere in there is XP professional and I'd like to get it out to do a reinstall. I called Sony and they said there's no way to reinstall just the OS and to reinstall it I'd have to do the complete HDD wipe and do the full system restore. Does anyone have any ideas how to get to the OS of recovery disks?

I would expect the XP install to be on one disk. Either as a folder called i386... Or as a ghost image (xp.gho) or similar.
