disappearing USB mouse

My Logitech USB optical mouse tends to disappear spontaneously, whether it's being used or not. Not associated with any particular action or program. A message will pop up stating that there is a USB device which is not recognized (click this message). Obviously I cannot click the message. The mouse will not awaken, but is fine on reboot. I am running Windows XP Pro.
Any thoughts on the cause and/or fix of this little annoyance?
Thanx

it is possible that you USB port is going hey-wired,, is it possible for you to plug in your mouse to another USB port, see that behavior occurs again !

It still happens on another USB port. Tried installing the supplied software drivers, rather than using the XP default drivers, but same problem.
Any other thoughts?

Cheers

Forget USB if Optical

I just came across your post.
Microsoft is now admitting that the Windows OS does not work properly with an optical USB mouse hook up.
Go to Office Max and look at a Microsoft branded USB mouse. It will say to not use the USB connection. Rather you should use the simple USB to PS2 converter plug.
You will notice only improved performance.
