failed installtion D:\I386\asms.

15 minutes into the installation when the system actually starts installing Win XP (bootable ,Volume Lic.) I recieve this error.
Error:
Installation Failed:\I386\asms. Error Message: Incorrect function.

Fatal Error:
One of he components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.
Incorrect function.
This is a Pentium II 400 with 128MB and 10 gigs. Could the CD burner be in conflict. Bios? Any clue? Thanks ,Tom

Could be several things causing this, the CD Rom drive may not be reading the disk properly due to contamination on either the disk or the lasers on the drive. Try cleaning the heads to see if that works or Try copying d:\i386 to c:\windows\i386 and run the install from c:\windows\i386

Same condition

I changed the CD burner but received the same responce except I get a "Manifest Parse Error : Invalid at the top of the document."Maybe because its a volume license? Thanks Tom

Send a message via AIM to simbill
i would say use a different xp disk, probably bad cd.. also try taking out your PCI cards that arent necessary for installation, example: nic, sound, modem, etc. then try it and if it completes, just put the cards back in and boot up

Fatal Error: One of he components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. Incorrect function.

I had a similar problem upgrading my OS from XP Home to XP-professional
(I use Dutch version,so there can be slight difference in terminology)
ERROR: unrepairable error, DATA error (cyclic redundance control)
Setup suggested that I have a damaged disk, try cleaning or use another disk
in Repair-console. When I checked error-log, it read:
Installation failed G:\i386\asms
Error message: DATA error (cyclic redundance control)

After reboot, I was able to continue set-up in Repair-mode, and used a fresh copy of XP-pro. The rest of the install-process was without problems, and I didn't expierience troubles, until... I tried copying the "main"-profile (that I had been using in XP-home) to a network profile with the similar name "main.network

Like ULTRASOLVE suggested run the install from c:\windows\i386

Angry failed i386\asms:DATA error(cyclic redundance control)

**HERE'S THE REST (sorry, I accidentally hit the SUBMIT-Reply button) **
I had a similar problem upgrading my OS from XP Home to XP-professional
(I use Dutch version,so there can be slight difference in terminology)
Installation failed G:\i386\asms DATA error (cyclic redundancy control)

After reboot, I was able to continue set-up in Repair-mode, and used a fresh copy of XP-pro. The rest of the install-process was without problems, and I didn't experience troubles, until...
I tried copying the main-profile.local (that I had been using in XP-home) to a network profile with a similar name "main-profile.network" My pc got stuck an displayed the FATAL ERROR-SCREEN (twice) and afterwards I wasn't even offered the Profile-COPY to-option in My Computer/properties/user profiles any more...(greyed out)
(of course the Copy to-function can be retrieved through system-restore: I get the same Fatal Error screen twice again and then it greys out again)

SECOND PROBLEM is that when trying to use Remote Desktop Control from another machine to the "Main Profile.local" on my pc, it's access is denied: "cannot sign on because of account restriction" (translated from Dutch)

Maybe my problem is caused by Outlook Express. In XP home, I had two identities: 'Main' Identity an 'Private'-Identity, both of which I couldn't remember the Identity-password of. As long as nothing changed, when activating OE it started up in this new created ('Private') Identity and there was no problem.
But after running Service Pack 2, still in XP-home edition, OE persisted on starting up Main Identity, asked me for its Identity password (which I don't remember) The only way to read emails in OE was to undo SP2 by SystemRestore.

Fortunately upgrading to XPpro/SP1 didn't bring on the same problem; even after running SP2 (this time in XPpro) activating OE in Main-profile.local starts up my "Private"Identity without asking for Identity passwords; and I can read my mail.

I told you about my problems with copying this profile to a network profile, so I tried, while logging in as administrator, a manual copying-procedure (copy /paste) of C:\documents and settings\main-profile.local -> c:\documents and settings\main-profile.network
This seemed to work well, it acts like an identical copy of main-profile.local, it
even allows unrestricted access by Remote Desktop Control,
BUT: Outlook Express will NOT PERMIT ME TO READ MY MAIL !! ( )
It opens Private-Identity all right, does NOT ask for my OE-Identity password, only asks for my internet-provider password, than receives new messages, but when trying opening a message it reads:
ERROR in Outlook Express (or something of the kind)

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ABOUT THIS ??

SHOULD I RETRY upgrade XPpro (SP2 this time) ??

or Like ULTRASOLVE suggested: run a separate install of i386 from c :\windows\i386 (after copying it from my CD XPpro/SP2 this time)
(PS: could anyone instruct me how to do this, a separate install ?)

I had the same problem and it was my Windows XP Pro CD. When I tried to install Windows Xp Pro on a computer I had changed the hard drive on, I got this error massage saying this.

"Installation failed: D:\i386\asms
Error message: The parameter is incorrect".

I didn't think it was the Win XP CD because I had used it before for my first installation on this computer. I tried to install Win XP 3 time’s with this CD and got the same results. I don't know why this happened but when I tried a new Windows XP Pro CD I had know problem and Window XP installed with out a hitch.

I Hope this helps you?

I had the same issue

I know this thread is old, but since this thread is the first that pops up in google search, I figured I might give one possible solution in here.

It turned out that my burning software(older version of nero) wasn't burning properly, so I tried a program called poweriso. it worked flawlessly and now at last I have xp up and running again

How I fixed it

I followed some advice from this thread and did the following:

* I installed PowerISO
* I burned a new Windows XP Pro SP2 disk at the lowest possible burn speed with PowerISO

I believe that PowerISO is not needed to burn the disk. I believe it is likely that just burning the CD at a lower speed will reduce the errors on the disk and make it easier to read on other CD-ROM drives.

I've had experiences before with quickly burned CD's not working on multiple other computers, while the same burn image at a low speed did work. That is why I think that the burn speed is the issue.

Good luck.

Thumbs up My Solution with a dvd

I ran into this problem today with a newly slipstreamed SP3 volume licensed install CD. I tried burning at the slowest speed with nero and burning on a different burner but kept running into the I386\asms problem. So before swapping out the dvd burner in the machine I was installing onto I opened the XP SP3 iso in UltraISO and set it to be DVD sized and then burned it to DVD. The install then ran perfectly and also noticeably faster than when reading from a CD.

Me too. Brand new slipstreamed SP3 would not get past the ASMS error. Your suggestion worked slartimitvar. I burned the ISO to DVD and boom, it works!

Same problem I had, with ASMS. Came here because of a Google search. Was burning my image to CD. After reading the suggestion here, I tried burning to a DVD-RW instead (my plextor can only do those at 2X max speed). Worked without a hitch!! Thanks

try using imageburn

the best freeware i found for burning iso files is imageburn a great small program..try burning the disks at the slowest speed possible.. and try not to load or run other programs at the same time unless you have i gig or more ram on the computer..i find it better then nero or alcho120 or any other iso burning program out there..

here is the link to the software
