XP wont let me burn CDs
I upgraded to XP from 98. Xp wont let me burn CDs with my Sony burner. Tried upgrading every driver possible. Still wont work. Bought new burner a BTC, same problem with Sony burner. Both claim compatibility with XP and both say some kind of communications error. Yes everything is plugged in right. Both will read CDs, but no burn. Why wont XP let me burn?

Do you mean built in burning? or other prog.
Check that "IMAPI cd-burning com service" is running (for Xp's burning).

XP CD Burn
What burn software are you using? If your using the built-in one in XP, it will only allow music CD's, not Data. If you install any third-party burning software (ECDC or NERO), you must disable the built-in burn software in XP.

Sorry, but XP will burn Data cds.
In built burning also works with Nero (appears to be machine dependant).

I use 3rd party ones, like Nero, CD Extreme, all have an error.
How do i disable built in burn software, and what is IMAPI?
XP sucks major balls, I like 98, even if it was prone to mess ups, it didnt suck like XP. You cant tweek Xp like 98.

XP CD Burn
In Explorer, right click your CD-RW, select properties, Recording Tab, uncheck "Enable CD recording on this device". Reboot. And yes I was wrong on the built-in burning Data CD's, does a half-ass job of recording MP3's. ANY third-party burn software is better. CloneCD is the best that I have found!

IMAPI is the cd burning service. Disable to stop cd burning from windows if you experience problems with 3rd party stuff.
Though windows burning features are actually a cut down version of third party software and i have found windows will burn any data.

Hopefully you've gotten it to work by now, but if you haven't try this. Goto your control panel > admin tools > computer management > Services and Tools > Services and check your setting for "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service." Probably won't fix it, but it was something I came across the other day and maybe it will?
Good luck
