problem with explorer and video clips

So here's my problem:

When I'm browsing files in a folder and click on a video clip, explorer shuts down. Then it says "There's been an error and so on..." in a new window, "would you like to send an error report to Microsoft..." And then explorer shuts down and reboots (just the explorer, not the whole computer.).

It doesnt do this with every video clip (never with mpegs), just some of them. I dont know if it's the video codecs or if the file is corrupted or.....(your answer here!? )

Thanks!

do you have the latest version of Microsoft Media Player and well as Direct X and I.E patches (I.E sp1)? if not , you may want to download them.

cheers

Yep, got all of those, MP9, DirectX 9b... All the updates available. It's not a media player problem since I never get that far. All I have to do is click the file once and explorer crashes.

OK,, let's try to work around this issue then instead going at it head on,,,

can you create another limited user profile on system and try your files on that new profile ? Please post your results.

hummmmmm,, are you sure that the clip you are trying to play in not corruped ? I have to say this,, but would you mind downloading and trying Quicktime ( http://download.com.com/3000-2139-10...l?tag=lst-0-21 ) or do you have it already ? can you play the same video clip on another computer by any chance ?

No luck there either.

"You may experience problems playing a video track in "filename.avi" because the required compressor couldn't be found. Would you like to close the movie or continue?"

No luck with BSPlayer either.

I doubt it's the player though. It seems more like an explorer problem since I dont have to play the clip with a player, just highlight it in the explorer window.
