Windows explorer crashes when opening any window

When I try to open any window (my documents, my computer, recycle bin) I get an error message, the desktop blinks out for a few seconds, and then the desktop reappears with its icons. Usually, I can open whatever folder it was that I was trying to open directly after this error occurs, but if I wait a while, it'll happen again. More info:

First, an error message comes up, very vague:
"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem... blah blah blah"

Then, when I say to see the error report:
"AppName:explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 01bf4236"

The technical info is too much to list. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? It's driving me nuts

first i would say try a virus scan, on-line are good to double check what your on-board has been doing.

next i would suggest system restore to a point when it worked. if still no luck try going to start>run> type
sfc /scannow
click ok to run with the xp cd in the drive.
if this does not fix the problem try a repair. boot from the cd, select the choices to install, once it has detected your copy of xp choose repair. you wont lose your stuff, will just have to reinstall windows updates and service packs. programs should still work, if not reinstall the programs.
