i have tried every anti virus i could find(pretty much all) always go back to the free avg, double check it with panda on-line once in a while. norton eats to much resources and has alot of glitches with updates. f-secure was ok, not worth buying though. i like panda but not any better than avg(Panda$20, avg free) avg wins again. McAfee, dont make me laugh, it is total $h1+. rav is ok, just avg is better. tried alot of lesser name programs, never was impressed.

To be honest AVG is as good as Norton and uses less resources. The only reason why i installed my Norton AV is because i have just put on my computer Norton utilities and while i was at it i installed Norton AV pro.
I will probably be back using AVG soon
But if you were to ask me what i think you should use out of the 2 i would say AVG all day.

you both mention norton system works, the program is ok if you dont install speed disk and the undelete feature(norton protected trash bin) these trash xp, wont notice it right away but it sneaks up on you. also go back if installed is painfull days ahead. this is only on xp and 2k sp4, sp3 and back on 2k works fine, ME and 98 work very well from it. can get some of the features to work on nt4 with sp6. yes, i have copies of nsw 2k2, 2k3 and 2k4. tried them all. i really do like clean sweep and it's reg cleaner.

i wont use it myself, i have copies because some people have it and want it, i dont argue. i have tried things like pc booster(which is great on 9x systems) all kinds of tweak programs, system utilities of all forms. the thing that kills them is microsoft updates, they cant keep up with the changes to the system. norton update conflict with windows updates on a scale that kills the os, seen the same thing happen with mcafee last year with a update. its a constant battle to keep you safe with security updates and not kill your system doing so. service pack 2 finnal release is rumored to have a anti virus being a new on-board feature of xp. i have sp 2 beta on a machine now and they added gui for the firewall that makes it usable so hope is up for a self sufficient operating system that does not need third party security. would be nice if the developers of the os developed the anti virus and firewall, less conflics = more happy

i have been known to download a program or two, but dont really have to. i work on alot of computers, i tell people to bring all disk for anything on their computer. if i need something, i copy it, not for pirating purpose, mostly to repair or reistall what people already have. also for example a compaq pressario pre-hp buy out had all of it's programs in the D drive in zip folder for recovery, spend a little time looking through and end up with the bulk of it's software bundle installers. plus you would be amazed at what companies will send you free, even microsoft.

The wife bought me my Norton Sys works 2003 pro about a year ago, that is how long i have had it and it has only been on my computer for a number fo weeks out fo the year. I know to many people who despise Norton with a passion. It is to bulky and i know it messes with the OS to a point of causing conflicts..

True and i9 am surprised they never went down that road a long time ago. Maybe BIll thought it would do him more harm and he would get hit in the courts for having to much of a monoply on everything?
