XP client machine connects 6x faster than 2000 pro host

I have 3 computers on a network at my house. They share an internet connection through this computer, a P3 800 mhz win 2000 pro machine. Its been recently reformated and cleaned up and performs like a champ. The cable service I am using operates by downloading through cable, but uploads through a telephone line. There is one file that I have been using to test speeds as well as speed tests. For some reason, the client computers download and upload almost 5 times as fast as the host. There are no programs running or any p2p programs so I cant figure out why its doing this. Is there a way to configure this setup? It cant be hardware since the other 2 computers connected have no problems. One is a celeron laptop and the other is a P4 1 ghz laptop. The P4 downloads almost 260kbs and runs winxp. The other laptop runs 2000 pro and downloads 100kbs and this machine here running 2000 pro only downloads at around 50kbs. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Philip

P.S. I do realize this is the XP forum, but since the XP machine is so much faster, maybe someone has ideas on how its configured and I could copy the settings.

I'm assuming you're using Windows Internet Connection Sharing, which I have found to be workable, but buggy. If I were you I would download a trial version of some other ICS software (I have used Winroute [www.kerio.com] before, it's stable, easy to setup, and there is a free trial version available) and see if that fixes your problem. If it does, then you know Windows ICS is the problem. If it doesn't, I'd try using a router, but then again you've got the half cable/half dial-up thing going, so that wouldn't work. I've never heard of a setup like that, BTW. I've heard of Satellite internet using dial-up for xfers, but never cable.

I had never heard of this either, but its through the cable company and has a cable line running into it, so I know its cable. Even before I tried sharing the internet connection, before this computer was on the network, it would still only connect at 50kbs. I would think it has something to do with the settings on this machine and not the ICS. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Philip

I don't know, I've never heard of that kind of service. I would call the cable company and ask for their assistance in troubleshooting it. I would leave out the fact that you've got ICS turned on. Whenever we have to call any ISP and they hear we're using a router or running ICS they just say they don't support that and they can't help us. I would just call them and only let on that you're using the Win2K machine and tell them it's running too slowly.

Thanks, I called them and they just say its my computer and to turn off all programs. The guy hooking it up wasnt the smartest either as i had to show him a few things and he kept calling back to the main office. Is there something about win 2000 that would cause this? I have no idea.

EDIT: the problem isnt fixed, so please keep ideas coming.
Thanks,
Philip
