Exclamation Windows XP Network Issues

Please help me.

I have 2 machines, one has been recently upgraded from 98SE to XP Pro and the other has been running XP Pro for a while now.

Specs are as follows:
Main Machine (Has had XP Pro for some time)
2.0GHZ Intel Celeron
512MB DDR266 (Less: 32mb O/B graphics)
80GB 7200RPM Samsung HDD
O/B LAN 100Mbps
56k External Modem (This is my sole internet connection)
Windows XP Professional Version 2002
Norton Anti-Virus 2003
Windows Internet Connection Firewall

2nd Machine (Upgraded to XP Pro 2 Days ago)
AMD Athlon XP2400+
128MB DDR266 (Less: 16mb O/B graphics)
3.2 GB 5400RPM HDD
2.1 GB 5400RPM HDD
O/B LAN 100Mbps
Windows XP Professional Version 2002

The main machine essentially (or should) act as a server for the 2nd machine, all the documents, music, my documents, e-mail etc. is stored on the main machine. The main machine is also set up as an internet gateway for the 2nd machine. All drives and printers are shared.
On the 2nd computer, all shared drives are mapped backwards from Z:

The main machine is setup with 4 users. All have admin priviledges.

THE PROBLEM:::

Everything works fine and as it should EXCEPT when MORE THAN 1 user is logged on at the same time on the Main machine (eg. someone else has got on the computer and 'switched user' rather than 'logging off')

When more than 1 person is logged on like this the following happens: All shared netword resources (drives and printers) but not the internet gateway seems to like, well, freeze on the 2nd computer. If I attempt to open My Computer or anything where a shared drive will show up explorer stops responding. The internet gateway seems unaffected.

Please help me solve this. As my computer relies heavily on the main computer for file access (such as my outlook e-mail) I NEED THIS PROBLEM TO GO AWAY!!!

Thank you in advance

adamjnz, you issue seem to be a legitimate one and I like they way you have explained everything ,,anyways,, that's a none issue and there is a fix for it on Windows XP SP2, unfortunately SP2 has not been released to general population yet.

got to wait.

cheers

being i have alot of network computers the best way i found to deal with it was remove the advanced networking pack from add remove programs and not use the xp firewall, have to disable it completely. after that problem was gone, i could get them to work with them, but not for long, day or two later was right back setting it all up again.

When is SP2 being released?

And may I ask where you aquired it from? Not insinuating anything dodgey, but I just wondered where you got it from? Is it just a developers version?

Just one more thing to clarify for me; seems a little silly but I need to be totally sure of it. SP2 is going to be like SP1 in that users can download it; yes? And, is it true that it is 128MB! I have seen pictures and reviews and its got me all titilated (I have an unhealthy obsession with Microsoft!) is it as good as it looks and sounds and must theoretically be?

i got the installer there. it is big, my download was 92 megs and the other machine i put it on was 88megs. it does add alot of interfaces for the firewall and several other items that were hard to find. the firewall was the big thing it added a control panel icon which allows you to set/modify it like any other third party software firewall.
