Ok i know there is a much simp-ler answer out there to your problem i just do not know it..I can tell you to do a repair what will happen is XP will restore you computer back to the way it was you will lose nothing all your information will still be the same except you will have install service pack 1 and other updates again as it deletes the updates.

Also doing this can result in some lost data but it has always been fine for me..
If you want to try it then follow these instructions.

Reboot computer with the XP disc in the drive follow the onscreen instructions you get as if you were installing xp.

When you get to the point were it asks you do want to reinstall Xp or repair choose INSTALL, don't worry next screen gives you the choice of a repair again. when it does now you choose the repair option. It will look like XP is being reinstalling but what it is doing is checking for any faults and repairing what it finds. You will be asked to put in your serial number 25 digit.. When it is finished you will find that your XP is fine again minus the service pack 1 and any other microsoft updates..Just reinstall those.

Be warned you can lose some data, but it has always been fine for me..

there is a tool called PE builder, then you download it and use your own windows xp CD to make a custom windows PE which is supporting ntfs natively, you boot with that CD and it gives you access to you hard drive, then you can move files between hards easily, there are ton's of plug-in's you can get for it, such as browser or drive cloner

Cheers

Good Luck !!!

Mike
