ntdll.dll Windows Explorer Problems

Hi I am having problems with Windows Explorer, quiet frequently i get these errors occuring in my Event Viewer.

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2800.1106, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.1217, fault address 0x000085c0.

Basically what happens is that my desktop refresh's and the system tray loses its icons, not all the icons disapear, but the ones i am using like Bittorent Icons, Mirc Icons and many other icons disapear and also the any programs opened on the task bar disapear too. It really ANNOYING as i cant bring those icons back to the systray, and the actuall programs are still working as i checked in Processes in Windows Task Manager. What I find weird is that its just looking through windows explorer which triggers this off, it can be any folder and all of suddent the desktop refreshes and lists the error in event viewer.

So what I have been doing is looking for possible solutions to this problem, so far all have failed, I have Format Reload many times with XP pro and i seem to find this error occurs when i install SP1a, I have had a look on google and it mentions this Ntdll.dll file had an exploit which the new version of the file eleminates. What made it even stranger is that its just not my pc doing this, I went to a freinds house and his was also giving him this NtDll.dll error. I have checked my memory for any errors and it seems fine, i used some different memory as a test and it still did the same problems.

I tried many things before i did format reload, i uninstalled Norton and Zonealarm, as for services well i turned of the ones i didnt need or ever use. Also i did many Spybot and Adware Scans and they found hardly anything exciting, just some Data miner cookies. But lets forget about my past OS installation, this problem occurs from fresh format reload.

Here all i have done:

1. Formatted NTFS Partition and Installed XP Pro
2. Installed Device drivers for System (please check my siganeture for details on driver revisions i am using)
3. Installed SP1a and also Critical Updates
4. (All Services are Running as default and i have not ammended any) (also Scanned Hard disk with Spybot and Adaware)
5. And hey presto ntdll.dll Problem is now back and Explorer keeps crashing

And I did check that http://www.eventid.net site, and it had no information to do with this particular problem. Just to let everyone know:

Source: Application Error
Event ID: 1000

If anyone has any know fixes or knows anything about this issue please let us know

thanks

ps: Just to let everyone know, my i have made sure my system has all the latest drivers ect and when i was diagnosing this issue i made sure Zonealarm and Norton Anti Virus was not installed, and used default windows build in firewall. I tried disabling many services too and made sure i started without any programs at start up.

kakarott kash, not that I know what your issue may be,, but I have to say that I have been noticing a trend with this type of problem on many forums,,, one thing that sticks out is the word "AMD" ,, I have been seeing it over and over, should that set a alarm !!?!!

You have mentioned that you have seen the same issue on your friends computer too,, is that an AMD as well ?

cheers

p.s. I'm not dissing anyone with AMD chip set, it is just a thought

Hi ya,

Yep i also noticed that there are many people getting this ntdll.dll error, but no one has been up able to solve the issue, see i think XP works fine when SP1a and the critical updates have not been installed on the system, but as we are all aware of now that if we dont install them we are acceptable to all sort of exploits.

My personal theory on this ntdll.dll case is when a person installs either sp1a or critical updates, it changes the version of the ntdll.dll file. This is because it had exploit, now thats all good fixing a buffer over run problem, but leaves this problem with Windows Explorer crashing on users, which is kinda annoying. I really do hope Microsoft are looking into the problem, so far i did try to install there sp2 beta after a fresh format of XP and still the problems occured, which basically says to me they havent addressed the issue as yet in beta stage. Im no expert in this field but its so dam annoying.

As for wether it is anything to do with AMD or Intel CPU's well i have to say ive only seen this occur on AMD based machines, I would love to hear some people with Intel based systems with this problem, i personally think its got nothing to do with either CPU systems but hey you never know unless you ask.

Just to let everyone know i can reproduce this error on many AMD chipsets, in all i have tested 4 chipsets, they are via, ali, sis and nforce 2 chipsets and they all reproduce the same ntdll.dll error in windows explorer. And also i tried many versions of the chipset drivers (ranging from old to new). When i test the systems i usually disable all the unnessary bios settings such as all the ports and any integrated device such as sound or video. And generally just have the Video card only installed, so no other devices are installed. Also no other external devices are being used, the only time when i use an external device is my Alcatel ADSL modem which i use to connect to the net.

Im totally stuck people, id love to hear more of your comments and thoughts about this issue and any kinda fix for it.

Thank you

kakarott kash ^_^

i have come across this problem a few times, this worked for me, and it is the only solution i have seen posted that others have mentioned working, some say it didnt or they dont have the correct path to alter. anyway it's worth a look and try.

Right click My Computer. Click properties. Choose the advanced tab. click environment variables. if you have a system variable called "NLSPATH" you need to delete it or rename it (select the variable, click edit, and change the name). Note that this might mess up what put NLSPATH there in the first place.

Here's my solution to this problem. It works but it's not a microsoft solution so bear with me. Your OS panics cause AMDs handle memory a bit different I think. The program is called DEP so you just exclude explorer from the list of programs it checks and you won't have problems no mo'

Getting rid of explorer errors in computers with the AMD chip on board.
It'll leave you vulnerable to virus maybe but at least you'll be able to use your computer unless you are terminally stupid then you should have no trouble with it. If you are and prone to sue then forget everything I just told you.
1.click the Start button at the bottom left of your screen
2.click the Control Panel menu item
3.then double-click the System icon.
4.Click the Advanced tab
5.Find the item marked Performance right under there is a button that says Settings.
6.Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
7.You'll see two options in that window click the second option that says "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select."
8. when you are finished with that then click the 'add...' button it should be visable at the bottom of the box. then you have to find where the file 'explorer.exe' resides on your computer most of the time it's something like this c:\windows\explorer.exe anyway add explorer to that list. It'll give you a warning just ignore it and click ok. Then you reboot and if you try it everything should work just fine.

Im using Windows XP without any service pack, i get the same error, always when im compiling some hube applications in Delphi 7 Enterprise.

Windows doesnt have the NLSPath as told above and it doesnt have the DEP activated.

Im using AMD, same error on my AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Desktop and same on my AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Notebook.

I think its related to AMD.

Tomorrow i will try Windows XP SP2. Lets see if this annoyng error get rid of my machine.

hello,
as this problem might be AMD-related, I would like to know how I can determine if the processor is an AMD.
in the error-report I am dealing with, it says "CPU AMD feature code".
but on the general tab of my computers properties, it says Pentium 4.
as this is not my pc, but a friends, who lives far away, I cannot open the case and look inside.
the error report also mentions "CPU Vendor Code: 756E6547 - 49656E69 - 6C65746E and "CPU Version: 00000F27"
thnks
Fred

ntdll.dll problem continues

This error just hit me today. Read over all the previous postings. When read about this occuring in only AMD's and that someone asked to be contacted if you had this occuring in intels's, I FIRST thought, well, I'll contact them and blow that theory. Just checked. Guess what - AMD. I have 3 computers. 2 intels and one AMD. guess there's a reason it was cheap, right? "AMD is just as good as Intel"..........

Anyway, tried all the suggestions listed above. They don't do the trick. Anyone?

Gail

Hello....I have just joined the forum .... found it from a Googling on the NDLL.DLL error search... I have been getting this error when using Clipmate on an XPSP2 install...Pentium 4....so far the DEP action seems to have solved the problem for now...I have also had to consign Ghost to that exception of DEP as well...down in the Registry Windows puts these programmes into a Layers folder....to run in the old mode!...

Thumbs up Explorer Keeps Crashing...

I was experiencing the same problems. Internet Explorer kept crashing very frequently, even in safe mode. I have an AMD system and as far as i knew i had not altered the system in any way, the problem just started happening for no reason.

Before going ahead with reformatting, i backed up my files and remembered i had added some image files to the task bar the day before all this crap started. I removed these and suddenly all my tray icons appeared and my computer sprang back to life and stopped crashing! I know this seems a bit of a simple solution but it is the only thing i had changed since the crashing started.

If anyone could explain more on this i would be grateful as i am not an expert, more of a dabbler.

I'm getting the same error.

Looks something like this?: http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/824...xplorer6qh.png

I tried removing DEP protection for explorer.exe, but now I just get that flickering problem without being prompted with that error message, and explorer closes. It's not really a problem as much as it is a nuisance. I also have an AMD processor.

ntdll.dll error

I've just done a fresh reinstall of XP Pro and I'm also getting a ntdll.dll error. Each time I visit this one website to get stock quotes I'm good for maybe 60 sec. then windows IE shuts down and I'm looking at my desk top. I have found a solution that works for me though. I've downloaded Firefox web browser by mozilla. Its free and it placed an icon on my desktop I can double click for easy access. So far I haven't had this error repeat.
Just a side note: To be sure I was getting the Firefox download from the legitimate Mozilla site, I did a search for Firefox and looked down the list of results for the Wikpedia site. There is a list of links at the bottom of the Wikpedia page.

Hope this helps someone,
Corbin

Ps, I'm also running an AMD (2600), XP Pro Service Pack 2.
