Network AHH!!!
I am runnning 2 computers with Windows XP Proffesional. I am trying to network both of the computers so i can share files over the network. I have Optimum Online Cable modem with a Linksys router and a Linksys Networking card installed on both machines. I have run the Network setup wizard on both computers and followed every direction on the wizard. When i go to look in network places nothng is there!! I do not know what is wrong. I tried to ping my two computers but it didnt work(in the command prompt/ i came up with "Request Timed Out"). Both comptuers have different IP Adressess)..Please give me some tips, ive read the whole troubleshooter and found nothing of assistance. Thank you in Advance

First off, right click on My Network Places and go to Properties. Then right click on Local Area Connection and go to Status. Click on the Support tab and give us the 4 pieces of info listed there (address typ, ip address, subnet, and gateway).
Other than that I would check to make sure both computers have the same WORKGROUP, you can check this by right clicking on My Computer and going to properties. Then click on the Computer Name tab. The workgroup should be listed there.

Also, you said you tried pinging the other machine, did you use the machine's name or IP address? If you haven't tried pinging the IPs. If that doesn't work, verify that they can both ping the gateway (192.168.1.1)

I know this might sound wierd, but try reinstalling or looking up and installing the drivers for your network card, I had the exact same problem with my home network, but my uncle downloaded the drivers and installed the network card, then it worked perfectly.

also you didnt mention whether the xp firewall is enabled or not. if its enabled it may be blocking the other pc. also make sure you have shares set on each pc.
and in my oppinion that network wizard is about as useless as it gets. much better off just doing the network setup manually.

There seems to be no drivers for my router, which is the BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch. But there is a firmware for it (?) I tried installing but it asked for my Server and Password...which i have no clue what that means......so any ideas?

You don't need to install drivers for the ROUTER, it was suggested that you update the drivers for the NETWORK CARDS. There shouldn't be a need to upgrade the firmware on the router, either.
