Firewall status vanished

I can no longer check that XP's firewall is activated.

Going to Control Panel > Network Connections > Properties (of either of my 2 connections) > Advanced tab throws up an error message:

'Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The WMI information might be corrupted.' It then recommends a System Restore -- which doesn't do the trick.

Can I get the info back somehow? Any wisdom out there would be much appreciated.
