Using multiple mouse(mice)
I have a Microsoft Intellimouse 3.0 and a Microsoft Intellimouse 4.0. There are many reasons I'd like to use both. The 3.0 is better for gaming because of the button layout and the wheel has indents when scrolling, which really helps in FPS games where your wheel chooses your weapons.
The 4.0 has the tilt wheel in the middle, which I would use in Excel and Photoshop, and it seems to be a little more responsive when working in Photoshop.
Is it possible to have both hooked up at the same time without problems since they use the same software/drivers? I was going to put one on the PS2 port and the other on a USB port.

I do not really know if you will have conflicts [I would certainly try it]. Since USB is an alive connection, you could simply unplug one and connect the other if you have easy access to a USB port. You cannot use them both at once. so if no conflict occurs jusr buy an adapter which converts from two PS2 connections to one USB plug. Cyberguys has them on-line.

i have a ball mouse on my ps2 port and a optical on a usb, for reasons very simular to what you describe. they have never caused me any problems. i have a small box with a cloth in it i lay the one i am not using in so it dont get bumped while i am using the other, they both control the cursor.

i think my biggest concern is because it is 2 different versions of the Intellimouse, but they use the same software and drivers. That's why I wondered about having both hooked up at once. I think i'll just get my USB hub back out and set it up, that way all i have to do is quickly unplug one and plug in the other right next to my monitor, and it only takes a second to tell the Microsoft software which mouse you're using.

but would you consider the Intellimouse software/drivers to be 3rd party since they're made by Microsoft? besides, the newest version of the software (v5.0) is pretty rock solid.

yes, i do consider those to be third party, microsoft puts their name on hardware, they dont make it. i have come across problems with microsoft branded items many times, for example the lan/nic/10-100 card with the ms name if you install the networking from the cd it is a pain to get your network to work at all.

I have both the Trackball Optical and Trackball Explorer from Microsoft. My keyboard is a Microsoft Office. They are all well made and substantially constructed. The software essentially functions as stated. All that said, practically everything sold in America today has, at least in part, third party involvement. That includes both hardware and software insofar as computers and ancillary devices are concerned. Both Dell and HP have moved their Service Support jobs to India. Go into about any Department Store's Mens clothing section and at least one third to one half of all the items are made in China. Manufacturing is steadily disappearing. What are we doing?

third party drivers are a must for enhanced keyboards, trackball mice...the main problem with this type of thing really isnt the driver, alot of people mindlessly click next through the installs getting a world of crap that they really dont need and have problems with other installed software. anybody else hate aveo? it comes in with alot of driver installations.
