Talking dumb xp update question..

after downloading sp1a, it connects and downloads directly through the site itself right? after choosing t archive the files, it started the download... well, when i was updating the files, my connection would sometimes time out and it would ask whether to retry or cancel the installation. after getting back online immidiately and pressing retry, it would resume... but now it takes forever for it to finish. i want to delete all the archives and have it redownload and hopefully my connection wont get cut and it finishes with no errors/troubles.

where are these files so i can delete em and try to make it redownload everything? thanks

(anybody here have any tips about updating xp before i do something dumb??)

reboot and start the update again, it will start back over correctly. i know what you mean about the taking forever, say when it started it said 55 mb and 20 minutes, get kicked off and it's up to 88 mb and 104 minutes.

The DOS-like functionality.

Not sure, I don't even have a floppy drive and I just use BartPE disc but I would assume that's why.

The link I gave you took you to a an Autopatcher window where about midway the page , clink the link "Download Windows XP Service Pack 1a" which will take you to the Microsoft download site. It is a large download, start it at bedtime or before and let it download while you sleep. Service Pack 1a is the same as Service Pack 1 except it is without The Java Virtual Machine (JVM). You must now get that separately from the Sun Corp here: http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp .
The AutoPacher site offers every XP [and Windows 2000 separately] update since the release of Service Pack 1 plus all the Powertools and some other extra stuff in one package. You can download it if you choose (large-about 125MB) or order a CD for only five bucks. They now offer a couple of lighter versions too. Great especially for those with multiple computers which employees and/or children do not update or those who constantly have trouble with Windows Update. Go here and see what they now have: http://autopatcher.com/ .
