Msconfig!!! Computer!!! Screwed!!! Help!!!

Earlier today I went into MSCONFIG to change what started up on my computer. I have like 50 programs come up when I turn my computer on and it is very irritating.

So when I went in, I looked around for a few minutes and then chose Diagnostic Startup. From the description it sounded as if it would just start up the basic things I needed. I didn't realize how basic it meant. So, foolishly, I went ahead and selected it and restarted.

Well when I got to my desktop, the Windows XP color scheme and theme was gone and I was stuck with the classic version. Also I couldn't use programs such as Norton or My firewall (Symantec). It wouldn't let me use System Restore or go to the 'System' panel.

So I go back into MSCONFIG and switch it to Normal. Then the same thing. Right now I have it on Selective Startup and I STILL have the same problems. By the way, Selective Startup was the default when I first went into MSCONFIG today.

I don't know what to do, so I've come here in search of help.

Thanks For Your Time!

turn your computer off, turn it back on. tap the F8 key constantly. when the boot menu appears select safe mode, see if you can run system restore from there.

I tried the safe mode trick. I didn't work. No dates for March appeared and it would not let me go to any previous months.

I have TDS-3 which will run and I'll try a scan with that.

Thanks so far.

I just scanned with TDS-3. I'll update it then try again. I don't think it is gonna find anything though.

I'm still stuck

Again, Thanks

CWShredder didn't work neither. It wasn't one of those.

LoL. This really sucks.

It sounds like to disabled some services from starting in MSConfig. I would go back into MSConfig and restart the services, starting with your firewall, themes service, etc.

I already tried going back to MSCONFIG and switching back my settings and starting them up. It still left me in a hole.

Well, I suppose I am going to back up what I want and reformat my HDD. I've been wanting to do that anyway.

Thanks Guys.

Control Panel/Administrative tools/Services. Right click Themes, click Properties. Is that service started?
