Angry Win XP locks up on Win98SE network

Have problem of integrating systems running WinXP SP1 into a Win98SE network. XP systems have SPORATIC errors running Softpro (a vertical market software for Abstract companies) and Word Perfect Corel 8. XP systems lock up sometimes in Softpro only, other times while merging in Softpro with documents from Corel 8 and other times in Corel 8 only. Errors on XP systems (with Softpro program) say that "PFWIN MFC application has encountered a problem and needs to close - AppName: pfwin.exe" and (Word Perfect Corel 8 program) says "Corel WP Executable has encountered a problem and needs to close - AppName: wpwin8.exe"

The Sofpro program runs off of a Win98SE Pentium 500Mhz server with SCSI HDD and 3 Com 100Mbs network card and Corel 8 program is installed locally on HDDs and only accesses documents from same server. (Have downloaded and installed latest patches for Corel 8).

Total network is composed of 18 workstations and 4 servers running Windows 98SE, two 3 Com 3300 Stacked 24 port 100Mbs Switches, Cat5 Solid 24AWG cable, three HP Jet Direct 300x/100 print servers with HP Laserjet Plus printers.

Max of only four workstations use Softpro server at one time and 98 systems have not had errors for over 3 years and still don't.

Help!!!! - have tried everything I can think of. Crazy thing is the lockups are so sporatic - sometimes a week or two apart and then sometimes daily!

It doesn't sound to me like there is an issue on the network. It looks like the program is just having problems running on XP. Have you contacted the software companies for the most recent updates?

don't quote on this, but I think there patches for SQL 7 for Windows XP (Since SoftPro run on SQL 7), you should look into MS forum for SQL 7 verses Windows XP.

cheers

Thanks for the ideas!

Have been working with Softpro tech support and none of their ideas have helped - such as setting program to Win 98 compatable, deleting and recreating Corel key, etc. Have also patched Corel 8 for problems with XP. Am running Corel unpatched on my system with NO problems.

NTFS vs FAT32 - When I installed XP on new systems I formatted drives with FAT32 to stay compatable with present network and retain ability to use a floppy boot disk in case of problems.

Will investigate the SQL7 patches for XP - and advise

Thanks again
