XP Memory Issues

I've been having problems with slow performance recently, as well as the remnants of a virus, and pop-ups issues, so I'm going to be re-formatting and re-installing Win XP Pro. Before I do, I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any softwares that are known for hogging memory on Win XP? I would like to run Style XP, and will probably be using MS Office 2003, MSN Messenger, and occasionally Yahoo! Messenger. Other than that, there isn't really any software that I'll be running all the time, or regularily. Does anyone have any advice to offer? Or any other reccomendations to optimize my performance.

Style XP, as far as I know, doesn't really use any more memory than the native windows theme manager. Windowblinds and similar programs do, but not Style XP. It looks like you're not running much, so I wouldn't be concerned about memory. Just be careful what you do on the internet else you're liable to end up with the spyware/virus problem again!

Is there anything I can do to protect from spyware (like an anti-virus program), to protect before it gets in? I use Ad-Aware, but I wonder if there is anything that can protect me, rather than only trying to remove it once it's there.
