Frames Per Second issue

Having major problenms with all games on my PC now. This has seemed only to happen from when directx9 was so kindly installed via Microsoft update.

Have tried various benchmarking tools - FPS varies between 125 and 1! Therefore game playing is impossible - games inc Championship Manager 4 (not particularly graphic intensive), SYberia, Republic the Revolution, Deus Ex etc etc

Have downloaded latest Nvidia drivers and latest Soundcard drivers, Norton etc show no hardware problems or conflicts, no virus detected using Norton.

There appear to be no problems when surfing - I view DVDs with no problem, access online football matches no problem, there is no problem displaying/changing web pages etc and no problems using applications such as Word, Excel, Access etc.

Now tearing my hair out......any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

check for viruses, worms and spyware stuff.. cause those stuff can eat up ur PC.
