Removing dual boot files

This is a little complicated...

Nevertheless this is what happened:

A little while ago I had to format a hard drive of mine on PC 1. In order to do this I dismounted the drive and put it on PC 2 to format, so far so good. As my machines are not in the same location I thought that I would gain some time by installing Win XP (Pro) on the newly formated hard drive. Of course in the meantime it has become quite clear to me that this was a stupid thing to do (those of you who know what I am talking about can gauge how stupid this was), but me not being a specialist...

Anyway in the end I dismounted the hard drive to put it back on PC 2 and it works just fine. The thing is that since then I have a double boot on PC 1 that gives me the choice between XP Pro and XP Pro when I start the machine, of course I usually choose XP Pro... Unfortunately the PC does not like it very much and got fairly slow in the process.

So my question is how can I remove this "ghost" dual boot and the files associated with it, are there any utilities available to do that? Is it sufficient to modify the boot.ini file? I guess not.

In the hope that my explanations were clear enough I hope that someone out there will be able to help or at least to provide some useful hints.

Exasperatly yours,

To make this clear in my mind, you fitted the hard drive from PC 1 into PC 2 and formatted and installed Windows XP on that drive.

This then gave you a dual boot situation where you were given the choice to boot to either OS from their respective drives on PC 2. You then removed the drive from PC 2 and fitted it to PC1 and PC2 now boots to XP and runs fine. But when you now boot to PC1 you get a dual boot menu and it is this that is causing the problem.

If this is the case on pc1 in the run command box type msconfig and under the Boot.ini tab click the "check all boot paths" button this will then tell you if there is a problem with the boot paths and offer to repair it. Choose to repair or delete the bad path and it should then remove the dual boot menu.

If this is not your situation with the drives as I have seen it post back and let me know where I have gone wrong in interpreting you r problem.

You got it right. I tried msconfig and deleted one of the path and so far it works fine!

Thank you very much for your help and quick reply,

T.
