Windows XP won't boot

I'm running Windows XP SP 2 and it freezes on the Windows splash screen. It boots up fine in Safe Mode, even with networking. I've tried many things including virus scan, chkdsk, defragmenting, repairing the registry, and disabling various drivers and services. I've checked the boot log, the event viewer, and the device manager, and I can't find anything. The most interesting thing is this. I've used msconfig to try a diagnostic startup. This shouldn't load any unnecessary drivers or devices, and yet it still won't boot. But it always boots in safe mode. What's the difference between the two? If I knew that I'd have the problem narrowed down pretty far. I've turned off the splash screen to see where it's hanging, but that doesn't tell me much. It loads some drivers, then it goes to this light blue screen that says Windows XP, SP 2, ... and it freezes there.

So, to summarize, it never boots normally, even if I use msconfig to try a diagnostic startup, but it always boots in safe mode. I saw another thread by someone with that symptom, but it was three years old, and I don't know if he resolved it.

Hey i've heard of a similar problem and it has only occured on SP2 computers. Do you have an Asus PC and also did everything work fine on SP1? If so i would suggest downgrading to SP1 because it has less problems. I'm currently using SP1 cos i had driver problems with SP2. Hope it helps.

Well did you have the problem with SP1? If not i suggest you revert back to it. SP2 has caused a lot of problems with a lot of pc's.

Ok. I'm not going back to SP1, I have had SP2 for a long time and its been fine. Thats like saying I didn't have a problem like this with Windows 98 so I'm going to down grade to that.

Anyways...I read somewhere it could be a USB problem...So I unplugged all my usb devices(2 devices, 1 Printer, 1 Mouse) and restarted. It ran fine. Just like it used to(This is a pretty new computer, about 1 month). Now a few days later its doing the same thing...Only it is working...but extremely slow. I tried the USB thing...Didn't work this time.

Hm

Well I did a system restore, and its working fine again. I guess I won't plug the Usb mouse back in...because when I did thats when the problems began(though they were not right away)

Hi,

Even tho you fixed your problem, for reference, what machine have you got? is it manufactured? home built?

IF it's a manufactured build, go to the relevant site and download a BIOS update.

Many updates correct USB connection issues.

It is home built, But I will see if I need to update the bios, I hadn't thought of that.

I have a mouse...its just a ball mouse, and I do a lot of online FPS so I prefer a laser mouse, and the one I have it awesome..but its USB. Its a Memorex, If it came with a converter I lost it...But I'm sure I can pick one up at radio shack.
