gifs in outlook

Sorry this is a previous thread but I'm assuming it's an easy one.
My Outlook Express can't recognise gifs in the body of an email;
eg. "send/forward as page" as opposed to link. Outside of outlook my computer pics folder has gifs that open fine. Snowmonkey directed me to Outlook tools-options-read tab-uncheck the read mail as plain text box/apply/ok. This box wasn't checked -I checked it to see what it would look like.
the result was no images at all-rather html language referring to
gifs. It's the particular smaller images in the body of the page that it's not reading. My only other option may have to be a system restore to a time before I noticed this hapenning-suggestions?
