whats the difference between SP1 and SP1a?

You may want to go directly to SP2 beta. I've just installed it and everything seems hunky-dory.

Windows XP SP1a is the same as Windows XP SP1 except that the Microsoft virtual machine is removed in SP1a.

Not for the computer user. Microsoft isn't offering Java VM anymore (although, you can still find it several places on the internet). They are trying to get people used to the idea that they have to go somewhere else to get Java (like Sun Microsystems). Here's Microsoft's statement on it:

To most users, it really doesn't matter which one you have or where you got it.
