Question LAN IP address

I run a small home network (4 host machines attached to a Zonet Router and out into internet land via a cable modem. No DMZ set up. DHCP configured. Internal network addresses range from 192.168.8.17 thru 192.168.8.20..............
My wan IP address is obviously what the outside internet user would see and not my private addressing. Is it possible to change the WAN address ? I have been having some hassle from external gamers whom I do not want to be associated with any longer and I think the best way would be to have a new public IP address ??? I have spoken with my ISP and have been informed that they cannot do anything ??? They say I should let the DHCP lease period run out and not use the net facility until after that lease expires and that way a new public IP WAN address would be generated ? Is that correct ? I just want to change my public IP address to deny these guys the ability to get to me. No ! I have not been a bad guy worthy of being blocked from certain servers........just trying to deny the bad guys the opportunity to ping/invoke a DOS attack. Likewise, I've had the same external public IP address for around 15 months now and for good security reasons, I would like it changed. Any thoughts ?

From the solution from your ISP it would appear that they issue dynamic IP addressing opposed to static IP addressing. This being the case if you follow their instructions you can change your IP address.

The reason your IP has stayed the same for so long, I would assume, is that you have the cable modem switched on constantly, this then renews the IP address at the DHCP lease renewal time.

To sum up how this works if the IP address assigned to you, is being used by you, when it comes time renew the lease you keep the same IP, if on the other hand the IP address is not being used by you it drops the lease.

So if you have a look at the "Local Area Connection Status" and click on the "details" button you will get details of the lease. If your ISP grant a lease for 2 days for example then at 50% of that time it will query the IP address and if being used grant another lease for the lease period,

So if the cable modem is switched off during that period it will release the lease and the next time you switch on should be issued with an new IP address.

Hope this has helped explain how to change your IP address.

WAN IP

Excellent................that just about sums it up I guess. I will check the lease renewal and shut down the Webstar Modem in order to clear the leased WAN IP address. I do indeed keep the modem switched on constantly and the address is assigned dynamically.................the Zonet router which I use has an admin page which I can either access via a web browser or telent to in dos. This gives details of the lease period of the WAN ip address etc etc so from that, coupled with the information you so kindly provided, I should be able to negotiate a new address. Very many thanks........Will
