Unhappy hard disk errors

I am running windows XP Home Edition and I am having problems
in fixing errors on the hard drive. Norton Disk Doctor reports errors in Security Descriptors and in the file system.

After selecting the fix errors checkbox and starting the test again
I was prompted to restart the computer to run the dos command
chksdk /f so that any errors could be fixed.

This procedure seemed to work fine but after running Disk Doctor again in Windows the same errors remain as before. Any useful advice with this problem would be appreciated.

Your drive may be failing; or Disk Doctor is a P.O.S.

Do you find that anything is not working, ot any errors are apparing?

Instead of chkdsk /f run chkdsk /r...it is more thorough

Unhappy hard disk errors

Thanks for your reply.

I am not cuurently experiencing any other problems on my system and all software is running fine. I have reinstalled Norton Utilities 2002 including Disk Dostor but this has not solved the problem in fixing the hard disk errors.

I have booted my pc into dos and accessed the mounted NTFS drive but my computer does not recognise the any of the following commands chkdsk, chkdsk/f , scandisk.

What is chkdsk/r? and what does it do? any further advice would be appreciated.

I would not worry too much about this and uninstall Norton... Although the Antivirus and Firewall product is ok, the sytem stuff used to worry me into thinking I had errors etc....

If you have no other system issues then you should be ok.

If you have SMART option in your bios the enable it and it will confirm your HDD's are well....

Best of luck

you have to type it from the command line in win or recovery console, it will check thoroughly for bad sectors etc and try to recover them.
You can also do the basic check by right clicking the drive,properties,tools. If any major problems are detected, checkdisk is smart enough to scan more deeply.

I agree- Norton's antivirus and firewall are ok but the rest of the stuff they give you just screws up your computer. My brother bought the Norton suite a couple years ago and was calling me all the time wanting help with the problems Norton was causing. He had to reformat time and time again (we live on opposite sides of the country so I can't GO to his house...). He would install the Norton utilities and then call to tell me his computer crashed. After a couple times of that, I started telling him NOT to install anything of Norton's other than antivirus and firewall. He did not listen... A few times later I finally had to tell him that if he installed the utilities again, he couldn't call me for help because he already knew what was causing the problems. His attitude for a long time was that he paid for it so dammit, he was gonna use it. He did finally quit using the Norton utilities when I threatened to cut him off from my tech support... He has not had a system failure since... DO NOT USE NORTON'S UTILITES other than antivirus and firewall.

I had exactly the same problem with Disk Doctor (as part of NSW 2003) with Windows XP Professional. I tried to talk to Symantec about the constant errors in Security Descriptors and the file system, but they would only say that they no longer supported NSW 2003. I figured that the problem was that Windows XP didn't like NSW 2003/Disk Doctor. I just went out and bought NSW 2005 thinking that would correct the problem. I figured wrong. The exact same problem occurs. BTW, this is a fairly fresh install of Win XP. Symantec kept acting like they knew nothing about this problem and first gave me links to info about clearing out all remnants of NSW 2003. I did that to no avail. The so called "errors" still occurred. Then they were trying to get me to reformat and reinstall Windows. There is NO WAY!! I have been running XP with NSW 2005 installed for about 3 or 4 weeks now, and there is nothing wrong with my system. Also the hard drive is a new 300 gig Maxtor SATA drive. I'm convinced that Disk Doctor needs a doctor. Just wish I would have kept NSW 2003 installed and saved a bunch of dough for the newer (but little changed) version.

I am joining others:

Norton Antivirus = Good
Norton Firewall = OK
The rest is JUNK, remove it.

Windows has all the utilities you need:
1. Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools
2. Right-click My Computer -> Manage.
