Installation Problem

Hi hope someone here can help me out I am stumped

VERSION : windows xp corporate
HARDWARE: new 80gig hard drive
PROBLEM: xp setup runs fine but when it goes to restart and load winxp I get a message saying choose which o/s to load (2 choices bother microsoft windows xp) and whether I choose either the xp loading up page comes up and then my screen will go to standby mode and nothing happends.

[b]Things I tried]/b]: while searching around I saw one post were the guy had a prob while installing to a partition that it installed half it to the wrong drive. so I disconnected my other hd. and re-formatted and reinstalled still get the same problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated. if you need any more info or have questions feel free to ask. Thanks a lot

I would suggest you to do a clean install of Windows XP,, that mean during installation READ the option and format your drive to NTFS and also, don't choose the repair option.

this could be hardware, did you add the new 80 gig drive to the ribbon cable already in the computer, or use a new one that came with the drive? did you set the jumpers on both drives, and if so what did you set them as?

I know this is slightly random, but I once had a similar problem when installing Win2000.

I however had a graphics card installed. My monitor was connected to the graphics card and not the monitor output of the motherboard, so the setup came up fine, but my PC would only go as far as the Loading Windows Logo, then either freeze or go blanks.

I put the monitor back to the original output, and then installed everything, installed graphics card drivers and swapped back, it worked.

Just something to think about if you have a graphics card installed.

@VirusEJ I don't believe I have a graphics card

@snowmonkey first couple times I installed I had done a clean install.

@known_criminal yes it is the old ribon as the new one didn't come with a ribbon. I had the old drive set as master and the new set as slave. partitioned it then switched them so the new drive was the master. Formated and installed xp. then formated again and installed again.

one thing I found after I typed that msg was that it allows me to log in, in safe mode and works fine.

Sounds like maybe your boot.ini file is messed up. If you only have on hard drive it should look like this:

I did a clean installation and still the same problem goes to the logo screen then to a blank screen a yellowish green line appears then the monitor goes to standby mode and no matter how long i leave it, it never comes out of standby.. but it allows me to boot in safe mode.

lets say for example your old drive is ultra ata 66, and your new drive is ultra ata100 or 133 and you motherboard supports umda 100/133 if you used the old ribbon cable that is for umda66 it will cause windows either not install,have serious problems(not unlike what you describe), or run very badly. if the new drive came with a ribbon cable, try it. if not it aint but a couple dollars, pounds, rubles,yen, or whatever currency you use to pick up a umda 133 cable and try it.

well I went and picked up a ribbon tried it out and still no luck the guy there said it sounded like a video card problem maybe a driver that isn't compatible or something.

this is the video card I have

ATI XPERT AGP W/8MB VIDEO CARD (00-VC-XPERT98-8A-0)

do you this could be something to try? any ideas where to find the correct driver?

I also enable boot logging and a lot of drivers did not load. I tried to include it but the msg length was way too big.

Thought I'd let you guys now I figured it out a bit ago turned out to be a monitor complication... my monitor was an azura 14+ and for somereason it wouldn't work with xp but worked perfectly fine with win 2000 got it all working great now
