Thumbs down Getting rid of WIN 98

Hey guys,

I recently installed WIN XP (had WIN 98 beforehand) and for some reason it didn't uninstall WIN 98 while it installed XP. So now whenever I start up I have a choice between the two. How do I get rid of 98? I don't need it no more, and I fear it might be lagging my computer in some way.

XP retains the original OS unless you tell it otherwise.
I assume you have multiple partitions. Reinstall using the new installation option. (select original "98" partition)

Is there any way to get rid of 98 without reinstalling XP?

I honestly couldn't give the definitive answer on that. Suffice to say, if you clear that partition, XP will no longer boot.

Unfortunately XP boots from your windows 98. If you wipe out 98 you will not be able to boot into xp. Once you wipe 98 you can copy - boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com files to your xp from the installation cd and then run the fixboot command in dos. Do a google search on xp booting for more explicit instructions. I had ME on c drive and xp on D drive. When I reformatted ME, I had lots of fun trying to get back into xp because the installation cd would not copy the files to d drive.

you can do so.

try these:

- Right Click My Computer, switch to "Advance" tab.
- Click "Setting" in "Start Up and recovery" (on the bottom)
- Set Default Operating System to Windows XP

Then set "Time to display.." to 0.

After that you won't see the OS selection screen any more.
Now you can safely delete the Windows98 folder. It is a good practice to check the "Profiles" folder under the old windows98 folder for anything that's valuable which you forgot..
