Internet Connection Icon doesn't show in taskbar

Hope someone can help me with this one...

After I connect to the net my internet connection icon doesn't show in the taskbar. Now I can't see my connection speed. And I have to unplug the phone cord from the modem to disconnect.

I've checked the "show icon in notification area when connected". I've tried restarting, even re-installing.

Any ideas?

right click the start button, select properties, click the taskbar tab. click the customize button, restore defaults. see if that brings it back.

For whatever the reason the fix for my winxp system turned out to be going to Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>On the Volume tab select
"Place volume icon in the taskbar"

Not only does the volume icon appear but so do the internet connection icons.

I have been checking back to this post for over a year to find a solution. What a shock to find something that worked today from the last poster. When I did the volume icon the internet icons and safely remove hardware icon (didn't realize the last one was missing ) came right back - I was thrilled. Then I restarted the compter and they were gone. Repeated and the same thing happened. At least when I want it I can get it. Thanks.
