Windows Update---then no Internet

Hi guys,

I updated Windows XP on a friends computer because it had never been done, and now the computer cant connect to the internet on the network.

I dont know if this is a common problem...or just us. I was wondering if it is possible to bring it all back to default settings because we have been messing with it.

I doubt it has anythign to do with it, but it is plugged into a DLINK switch. Ive had problems with Dlink before too....

The network is a big university network, but the internet was working fine until we did the update.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

make sure you disable the xp firewall, if that dont get it back going, check add remove programs and see if you have the advanced networking pack for xp installed, remove it and reboot. see if that gets it back going.

After searching around the web...this seems to be a common problem. All of a sudden the IP reverts to 169.254.XXX.XX. Right now we set it to a static ip, and that seems to be working, we have got to get it back to automatic cause this comp moves around.

that link has trouble shooting tips for everything network related. you can also look around the site and find the proper setup for any network situation. i think you have the advanced networking pack for xp installed, if you do you will have to configure you options to get it set correctly, or you can remove it and it will be like it was before the update, may just have to rerun the internet setup wizard.
