Windows XP overnight crashes

I have recently upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP professional.

The upgrade works fine except for two problems.

1. If I leave my computer on overnight it will crash. When I use it during the day, even leaving it alone for several hours, it seems to be fine?

2. When I plug my USB digital camera in, I get a popup box which says to choose the program with which to open it. However, no choices are available. I called the camera company. They said to uninstall their program and re-install and upgrade. I did this and still the same problem. Their answer was that it was likely the operating system problem.

Any suggestions

Pentium (R) 4 CPU 1.66 GHZ
256 MB ram
Norton Antivirus program
Windows XP Version 2002 Service Pack 1

if it is at all possible to back up your files, favorites, emails, and anything you have and format, and clean install xp then add the programs you use back to it your problems will probably go away. if you did the upgrade, and had no problems with drivers, or compatibility you should be able to get through this just as easy. upgrading to xp is like buying a brand new car, taking out the motor and using the old smoker from your last one.

I have had that option in the back of my mind, but because of all the time involved and numerous programs, etc. I have been trying to avoid it - maybe do it when I have more time.
