Going back to Windows 98 might not be a bad idea. Windows XP is outright not stable, and it give too much control of your computer to MS. However, Windows 98 is not stable either, so it might not be a bad idea to go with Windows 2000. Pretty much all IT professionals (network administrators and programmers, not sales people) agree that Win2K is the best MS OS, still much better than XP. The only reason for anyone to buy XP is because of the marketing. Its preinstalled on almost all new PCs, and all of MS's advertizing. So if you have access to a copy of win2K, I'd try that before going back to 98.

insert your XP CD and do the hardware compatability test to see if all your hardware is compatable. I am pretty sure by your explanation that you will get a report of components and software not being compatable with XP. Your choice, disable them or switch OS's. Just remember that NTFS partitions will need different drivers for the software, but you should be relatively safe and stable with 2000, like the previous replier said. 98 is pretty unstable....

I can't agree with either of you... XP is solid as a rock on my system. As was 98.
Nickilee, i think you will find the Audigy driver to be the problem.
DS1919 has the right idea

well, to be perfectly honest, I like XPpro the best. I like the security, the better NTFS, and the other features it has. I do not think it is unstable, but at this time, XP has not gone through the extensive "usage" as with 2000, which has proven itself. I do not like the look of XP, and I change it to the classic style. At this point, more apps will run on 2000 than XP.

And 98 is only as stable as the FAT32 filesystem, which is crap compared to NTFS. And security sucks. But, its lightweight.....

Hmm.. OK here's my take on this - The chances are your getting an application error and not a driver error with your Audigy card. The very early cards were released with software that doesn't support XP. Go to creative.com and search for program updates rather than driver updates.

As for the battle of which is the best MS OS - well..... 98 is about as stable as a bloke who sinks 40 pints and trys to walk, 2000 is a good system but it is a little falkey at times. Now XP provided you've got the power for it, it works.... Well.
