Explorer problem

I just discovered some .mht files that were showing white space instead of an icon in explorer.
As the files opened correctly, I tried resaving one over itself. For a split second, it showed an icon but then explorer crashed taking the desktop with it.
I tried to restart explorer.exe through task manager but that brought up a message saying explorer.exe had caused an error.
I had to reboot.

Anyone got a clue what's going on here?

WinXP Pro with all the updates
Acer Aspire 1700

Thanks.

Internet Explorer may of got corrupted, a bad file..

You could doa repair of IE6 if you want it may well fix it..

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Thanks for that.

When I get to the install part it wants me to point it to the SP1 CD. I downloaded the service pack so where on my hard drive to I point it?

I am sure it means XP disk. Put XP in the drive and when it asks you to point to SP1 direct it to your cd rom example drive D.

Or type in "C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles" (minus quotes) see if that does the trick.
